Well known for their richness in nutrients, Macambo beans are thought to aid in brain function and digestive support.
I discovered these crunchy morsel while shopping at Erewhon last a couple months ago. My temptation got the best of me when I saw someone crunching on them while in the store like they were potato chips.
A little background on Macambo Beans:
They’re like the Rainforest’s best kept secret (well…not anymore). It’s a close relative of the Cacao plant and is valued by the local Amazonian people for its “invigorating” properties and it’s impressive nutritional profile in which provides energy for long days in the equatorial heat.
Speaking of Nutrition…
Macambo beans are packed with protein, they’re 30% fiber and contain mood-boosting serotonin compounds along with Omega-9 fatty acids. One serving (12 beans) have 6 grams of protein, 9 grams of fiber, and 12 carbs.
Ok, soooo what do they taste like?
First of all, Macambo beans have an interesting mouth feel. They’re flaky and crunchy in texture and have a complex buttery flavor. To me, they are like a cross between a white chocolate with a hint of vanilla and a potato chip (because of the salt). Sound weird? Don’t think, just give them a try haha! They are about the size of a quarter and make for satisfying as a snack straight out of the jar or. One serving (12 beans) is all you need for a sustained energy/brain boost.
Feel free to crumble them on top of salads, add them to trail mix, mix them in with homemade granola or hey, blend them into creamy elixir drinks. The possibilities are plentiful!
