A compote with only 3 ingredients? Yep! you read that right. This chia berry compote is subtly tart, pleasantly sweet, super versatile, multi-purposeful, and most of all, super yummy!
First off, let’s start by explaining exactly what a compote is. And for this I’ll use good ole’ Wikipedia:
“Compote: (French for “mixture”) is a dessert originating from medieval Europe, made of whole or pieces of fruit in sugar syrup. Whole fruits are cooked in water with sugar and spices. The syrup may be seasoned with vanilla, lemon or orange peel, cinnamon sticks or powder, cloves, other spices, ground almonds, grated coconut, candied fruit, or raisins. The compote is served either warm or cold.”
For this chia berry compote, I used frozen, blackberries, strawberries, and blueberries.
You guys, this berry compote was so simple to make, it’s ridiculous! Before making this recipe, I always believed that compote was this sophisticated fruit spread that took 1+ hours long to make and then had to sit and marinate for a few days before enjoying. Nope–I was wrong! The whole thing came together within 15 minutes!
Once you whip this compote up–like me–you’ll begin to thing of everything you can put it on: toast, sandwiches, french toast, on top of ice cream, pancakes, etc.
Speaking of pancakes, this chia berry compote would go great on top of my Simple Whole Wheat Pancakes! I make pancakes at least once a week and I just can’t wait to ladle a big spoon of this berry yumminess on top of a 3 stack:)
As I’ve mentioned before, one of the things that I love about this compote recipe is how versatile it is. Leave it as is, change the types of berries, and/or include add-ins such as: cinnamon, vanilla, coconut, ginger, etc.
Get creative!
