I used this same recipe in our Vegan Mole Bowl Recipe. To be honest, I had never prepared basic tempeh before. It was time I give it a try. Typically what I’d do is buy an “already seasoned/flavored” tempeh and just heat it in the skillet. Buuuut no need for that, now–this was so easy to make! Once you get the hang of prepping plain tempeh, flavoring possibilities are endless!

How to Prepare Tempeh: A Basic Meat Substitute Recipe
Ingredients
- 8 ounces tempeh
- 1 cup vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Place the tempeh slab and vegetable broth in a small pan and bring to a boil over medium heat.
- Cover and cook for 10 minutes and then drain the tempeh.
- Cut the tempeh into cubes and then add them back into the pan along with the coconut oil. Brown each side over medium heat for 2-3 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper.
